deux billets, svp. thursday, march 8   (see photos)

The bus system around Nice is amazing. For 1€30, a person can ride one way around an area that extends roughly a hour beyond the city. We took advantage of this so much that even Cylinda got motion sickness. Do we know how to work the system or what?

First, we got some pastries at the corner bakery where there was always a line out the door at any time of the day. That meant it was good, at least in our heads. But also in our tummies because the baguettes, sandwiches, cookies and the croissants were exceptional. The patisserie is called Multinari on Rue Alphonse Karr if you're ever in Nice.

So ok, first stop was the Russian Cathedral in Nice. It's purported to be the grandest orthodox church outside of Russia and was commissioned by the vacationing czar himself, Nicky 2: If I'm going down, I'm taking my family with me. And did he ever! Well, the Bolsheviks helped.

Next, we got on the bus to Eze, a hilltop village high above the sea. This was about a half-hour ride from Nice on the middle road of the Three Corniches. Grace Kelly was killed in an accident on the highest road and with the way the roads wind back and forth, it's not difficult to see the danger in driving at high speeds. Thankfully, no one let me behind the wheel of the bus.

We continued our journey to Monaco in the afternoon, which was about another half hour east. It's its own principality, but is completely surrounded by France and actually has lots of government services taken care of by them. Honestly, we weren't that impressed. If we had a lot of money and a yacht, maybe we'd think more of it. I'm not holding my breath. It was just kind of bland and uninteresting for us po' folks. There was a nice woman who asked us if we needed help while we were looking at a map. That was kind of her.

We went back to Nice by the low road along the sea and went through all the little towns that seemed to melt into one another. There was a traffic jam and Cylinda got sick because she had to sit facing backwards. I got sick because that's what I do.
