Tennessee Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt won her 1,000th game last night in Knoxville, TN. That's more than any Division I basketball coach in...ever. She did that in 35 years and she's not stopping any time soon. Summitt has a contract with UT to coach until 2014 (and probably longer).
She's a mad genius at this game. She has to be to never have had a losing season. Never. Ever. I met her once at a book signing after the Lady Vols won the 1998 championship. Summitt is tall, imposing and every bit as intimidating in real life as she is on tv. And in this cover shot:

The article is told mostly from the viewpoint of former Lady Vol Michelle Marciniak, my favorite basketball player. I've had interesting encounters with MM which I need to share some day. Nothing creepy, really. Ok, maybe the... well, you know, nothing illegal.
Anyway, congratulations Coach Summitt!
For the first time in about a decade, I'm actually going to watch the NBA Finals. I grew up a Lakers fan so I naturally hate the Celtics. All Boston sports, really, are vile. Chicago sports teams, too. All of them make me want to punch something. Not that it takes much which is why I'm going to attempt some Buddhist meditation tomorrow. I'll try not to get kicked out of the temple.
Anyway, i's been about 20 years since these two teams have met in the finals and I suppose there's a few things different this time around:
- I have no idea who any of the players are except Kobe Bryant.
- I have watched less than 10 NBA games total since Magic Johnson retired.
- The only players I know are on the Spurs because Cylinda has some weird "hometown pride" going on.
- What's Larry Bird been up to?
- My favorite pro player ever was Byron Scott. He's now the New Orleans coach which has nothing to do with L.A. or Boston.
- The Forum is now owned by a church. This church does not own a NBA team.
Except for all those things, it's a rematch of the classic 80s rivalry. Exactly like it!
Congratulations to Tennessee Lady Vols on their 8th national championship! Almost as good as Tennessee winning was UConn losing in the semifinals. Almost...
My two favorite Lady Vols of all time are Michelle Marciniak (like duh) and Chamique Holdsclaw. We once drove four hours on a whim to see Chamique because the she played the game with more grace than anyone I've ever seen in my life. The basketball was just an extension of her hand. I hope she gets back in the game soon. For now, she's chilling in the ATL.
Here's an odd looking picture of MM and CH from 1996. It's not a strange picture to take because they're obviously celebrating a win, but a it's strange picture to publish.
