Another year, another DragonCon. After each one is over, I have my normal surly attitude about being glad that it's over and not wanting to go to another one. The massive crowds and some off-putting fans asking off-putting questions in panels really annoy me. I know that comes as a surprise. But this year, I want to go back like right now. Here are some possible reasons why:

For the first time ever, I have con crud, a cold-like sickness that comes with mingling with thousands of other people. This is causing me wooziness and in this state, I'm not my normal anti-social self. I love everybody!

During the con, I wasn't wearing my everyday-make-no-eye-contact demeanor. I was smiling at strangers and then, oh my gosh, they started talking to me. It was weird and oddly pleasant, but not something I want to encourage.

Although some people had awful experiences, I didn't mind the gawkers who wanted to experience the con without a badge. They weren't geeks, but everyone I saw was excited at all the costumes and taking pictures and not mocking anyone. I liked seeing kids all dressed up, having fun and seeing that they don't have to stop dressing up when they grow up.

Along those lines, I've almost convinced myself to dress up in costume next year. The small obstacle I have to overcome is that I possess no talent in creating costumes and have no idea where to start. But I do have this ability to do what I set my mind to and if I want to make a master cable that Rita wears as a belt in Flushed Away, I'm going to have a master cable next year.

The guest line-up at the con this year was fantastic. I finally got to see Adam Savage from Mythbusters after striking out last year. The main stars of I Dream of Jeannie were not dead and it was kinda neat to see them even though I don't remember any episodes. My favorite panel was with the creators and voice actors of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Seeing normal looking people do the voices of Frylock, Master Shake and Meatwad was ridiculously funny and surreal. I had wished a few years ago to see Marina Sirtis on a panel with Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner and my wish came true. They were joined by Levar Burton and Denise Crosby so it was half of Star Trek : TNG Season One together again.

So all this good stuff coupled with my brother picking up our badges for us so we avoided registration line hell made for one of the best cons ever. More photos on Flickr.

Because I give into peer pressure very easily (take note, everybody), I'm going to follow Cylinda's lead and have my own Project 365. The goal is simple enough: Take at least one photo per day for an entire year. Share only one of those photos on one of the photo sharing sites littering the web. I'm going with Flickr since they seem to have the largest Project 365 presence.

I'm not quite sure when this project will flame out due to boredom or anger or some other irrational emotion that I often experience. And you'll be able to see just when I can't take doing this damn project any longer. The photos will be updated over there in the right-hand column. If you're at work and are bored out of your skull, here's the link to my Flickr account where there are some photos taken at Tybee Island over this past weekend.

If you're now more bored than ever, remember: It was your choice to click on that link.

What did Chevron ever do to you hippies?

This photo was badly timed because I could have caught them directly in front of the Chevron sign, but I was too slow. They're heading next door to the BP to walk about in circles and maybe cause some havoc. Probably not.

In principle, I understand boycotting BP makes you feel like you're doing something effective against that evil corporation. And the people who claim that it's just hurting small business owners (the gas station owners) have to realize that we all make consumer choices every day. This is just another choice, albeit one that isn't based on solid fact. I don't know the specifics of their contracts, but here in Georgia, the stations aren't owned by the BP so it's probably minimal whatever profits are sent to the corporation. Still, these owners decided to do business with BP, a company with a ridiculous record of disregard for safety, and now they have to pay the consequences.

I personally will try to avoid stopping at a BP gas station, but since I only buy gas once a month, I'm thinking my actions will be negligible either way. And that's not something I can say about the stupid stuff I do everyday. Yay!

It's hard to take poor photos in a disgustingly picturesque city such as Charleston, South Carolina. Things are so old there and as everyone knows, old stuff makes for good photos. I may have cheated by shooting mostly in black and white which makes old things look even older, but everyone probably also knows that I'm not above cheating.

All paths in Charleston lead to one of two types of places. The first are churches and their graveyards.

So many grave markers. They just pile them up in corners.

The second type of path go to parks.

There a few water fountains in these parks, but not enough and not everywhere, especially when tourists are about to die of dehydration.

This is the courtyard of our hotel. Classy. As. Hell.

More photos from South Carolina can be found in one of three Picasa albums:

Happy Independence Day! Marietta (excuse me, May-retta) was decked out a day early because they love this great freedom-loving free country of ours so much.

So it occured to me after I put up these photos that three of them have nothing to do with the holiday. I'd draw in some flags, but I trust that your freaking amazing imagination will do that for me and also, I'm incredibly lazy.

As is probably apparent, my latest thing is photography. I've always liked taking pictures or at least, telling Cylinda to take a picture of this or that. I'm very good at telling her what to do. But now that I've got my own grown-up camera, I've decided I don't want to shoot the normal things people want to see. Oh no, I want to take photos of household products in a sterile, completely fake environment. So, I built a lightbox.

It's made from a cardboard box, drawing paper and masking tape and it's ghetto-fabulous. There are some shop clamp lamps and some blinding light bulbs to light the thing. The cat isn't part of the lightbox (yet). It's working out okay so far, but I'm probably going to get one more lamp so that I can truly blind myself for good. I'd post some photos, but you see, they're boring as hell. It's actually for microstock photography and if you know what that is, then I'm sorry because it's a strange bug to be bitten by.

We spent four hours at the Sloss Furnaces yesterday in Birmingham, AL. That may be kind of weird, but since it's a National Historic Landmark, we had a reason. Hey, I didn't say it was a good reason.

The furnaces are basically what built Birmingham. When it closed, the city stopped all construction, too, and got stuck in the 1950s. That's not true, but if you've ever been there, it seems like did.

It was actually an immensely interesting place to take photographs. I'm just learning the technical skills needed to properly use a dslr and this was a great place to practice. I royally messed up my exposures for the shots that included the sky so here are some non-sky shots that don't deflate my ego.
