Nos Lendemains

Isabelle !

7 for 2007

Dalai Lama
Who needs anger management classes if you got the DL? Not me! Yen: Compassionately-enabled since October 2007.

"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." -- Dalai Lama

Technology
A new laptop and a cellphone has brought me closer to current societal standards. Aggregating RSS feeds and relearning the finer points of XSL transformations for work - fun, but it's still work.

France
I was just reminiscing about this trip the other day... and sorely missing the Chinese food from a takeout counter in Nice. Yes, inappropriate, but I get to try again this year. This first trip to the mother country was everything I hoped it would be and more: friendly, frenchy, beautiful. Wait, are we talking about the country or the women? Har har. It was less, too: chaotic, crazy, inaccessible. Sitting at the park on top of the gorge in Gourdon was one of my best moments of the year.

Maladies
A radar head and some kidney damage in the boys and a bout of bronchitis in and a hospital visit for me makes this the year of the sick.

Novel
I originally wrote my time jumping meth meets Pony Express story three years ago and I finally rewrote half of it for Nanowrimo in November. I'm actually proud of it which is difficult to admit because I find my writing extremely tedious <-- like that.

Isabelle

First the woman releases my new favorite album of ever and all time in April - De retour de la source. Then she smiles and winks and talks to me during her concerts in Quebec. How, I ask, how can I not be insane in the membrane over her? I do have my limits, though. Obsess over her? Yes. Create a painting and selling it online for 15,000 euros?

Maybe.

Sandwiches
Po' boys, banh mis, croque monsieurs, cubans...bring it. I love you all so much I don't know how quite to express it.

I think I'll end the year on that note. See ya, 2007.

Taking Chances

Holy crap, this is good.

Sorry for being so surprised, especially for being a public, out of the closet Celine fan, but I don't always live in some dream world where everyone loves this wacky Quebecoise. I know in reality, Celine has made some truly eye-rolling bad music. But this album, it's not one of those times.

It's probable that I've already lost all credibility by just buying the cd, but for those of you with an endless pool of hope for me (thanks!) I'm telling you, give this cd a listen.

Celine's not trying to make your dog suffer with any ear piercing notes. Honest, this a pet safe album. She's very, very restrained with almost all 16 songs. She goes gospel, folk, hip hop (no lie!) and other genres, all tied with some catchy pop.

She covers Heart. It's Heart, people! Come on, that has to count for something. Some other immediate winners are New Dawn, A Song For You, and That's Just The Woman In Me. This last song has parts where you would not even believe that it was a Celine Dion song. Or even Celine Dion singing.

How's that for a positive review? And that's the best way I can push this album. Buy it in spite of the Celine-ness.

(I love you, Celine! I bought it because of you!)

When worlds collide

Big release of the day award goes to Celine's new English album Taking Chances. Come back tomorrow if you care to read what I think about it. (See you then, mom!)

Strange release of the day award goes to Anne Murray. On her new album Duets: Friends and Legends, you can hear in one sitting:

I'm more freaked out than you, if possible. It's not everyday I learn that Anne Murray is the glue that holds my universe together.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) today is only the Canadian release date. It'll be released in the U.S. in mid-January. Consider this your preemptive warning. <-- Yes, I know that's redundant, you can never have enough caution in this type of situation.

Lack of faith

During my summer of drugs or some other Isabelle-induced haze, I completely missed the release of Lori McKenna's new album in August. This is her first album after Faith Hill, talentless but pretty!, "discovered" (haha) LM and made her a country supastah. Mr. Faith Hill (Tim McGraw) even produced this and produced and slightly soul-less it is, although that's never stopped me from enjoying such music, right Backstreet Boys?

The album as a whole still has a LM sound and that's all I care about. Ok, that's a lie. I kinda care that she's all air-brushed and Nashville-ized but that mostly comes from some possessive "I knew her before you did, Faith" feeling. I have issues with Faith Hill is what I'm saying and more so than ever now that she does the opening on NBC's Sunday Night Football. It's just so bad. I know, I'm going to have to work through this...on my own time.

Anyway, Lori McKenna's album is called Unglamorous and it's available everywhere. There's a re-do of Falter, which is really better in its first incarnation on the Kitchen Tapes. My favorite so far is Your Next Lover, a typical LM song. Note that typical = freaking awesome. This woman can do very little wrong since I saw her before Faith did on Miss Folk America years ago. Have you seen that little schlock opera, Faith? Have you? Hmmmm?

Put your hands together

Celine to go goth?

If anyone can make goth music cheesy, Celine can. Where does the talent end?

Murray set to release duets CD

Doesn't Isabelle look ginormous here? Although, the picture is life-size... Speaking of cheesy, you know Anne Murray will bring it, but Isabelle's got the goods, too. (woohoo)

Dreams do come true

...just not the kinds that count, like winning the lotto or door prizes. But I won't be picky right now because I finally got to see The Crüxshadows in concert at DragonCon. You could say this was a long-standing unfulfilled dream of mine that was gloriously realized just a few days ago, but that would be a lie.

Ok, I have wanted to see this darkwave goth band for the last 3 years, but I didn't put much effort into waiting for their midnight shows. This year, since we stayed at one of the host hotels instead of commuting, I continued to not put forth effort, but with remarkably different results!

Rogue (here in this picture taken during the show) is their lead singer. I have to say, he speaks so properly, he puts me to shame (ok, not hard) and I'd take him home to meet the parents if his hair could fit through the door. What an upstanding guy! The rest of the band includes a guitarist, keyboardist, some dancers and a violinist who jumped around and played at the same time. She and Natalie McMaster could duel.

I realized I haven't said anything about the con yet, so I think I'm going to drag this out in excruciating, mind-numbing detail for the next few days. In the meantime, here's some photos from the ATL Journal Constitution of the parade:

I caught it at a rave

We saw an Indigo Girls show last night at the Roxy and, for the most part, it was the normal concert experience - bad mood, creaky knees, hacking cough... wait, I could be confusing this with bronchitis.

Anyway, the difference was that this show was taped for DVD. There were 3 stationary HD cameras in back, 2 hand held cameras on stage and a big swinging robot arm contraption that hovered over the crowd. Except for the crowd camera, it was rather unremarkable. I don't mean that in a negative way, but it's mostly likely not very positive, either.

During the show, they only performed one song twice (Rock and Roll Heaven's Gate both acoustic and electric). They played some oldies (Land of Canaan!) that may have something to do with the taping. Who knows... The camera operators on stage weren't even really noticeable since they stayed to the side and didn't rove around. They probably knew how Amy "dances" and that's why they were keeping their distance.

My electric youth

In the great, big checklist of stuff to do during my life, seeing Debbie Gibson in concert was not on it. But, we all get alarming surprises every now and again. Yesterday, I added her to my list just so I could check her off (does that sound a little inappropriate to anyone else?). Done and done. Besides some Broadway musical tunes, I heard all these awesome songs:

What classics. For real, Lost In Your Eyes is one of those songs that gets stuck in my head and I don't mind. Better than stupid Tiffany thinking she's alone now. But I'll admit to liking Could've Been. That's a tearjerker. Oh, you 80s. Radio was so awesome back then.

I'll add a picture later cause I can't find one of the show anywhere. Stupid Internet. But if you close your eyes and think back 20 years to the 16 year old Debbie, just take off her hat. Voilà! That's what she looks like today.

D'elles

Si j'étais perdue, c'est une chanson refaite merveilleuse ("If I needed you" de Townes Van Zandt).

This does not compute

A few disclaimers:

Labels: , ,

Redheaded confusion

We saw Patty Griffin in concert last night. This was a sad, unrequited dream of Cylinda's that was finally requited. She got to hear her favorite song, which made the ridiculous parking charge all the more worth it. As for me, I knew about 3 songs and I liked two of them. That in itself exceeded expectations.

Honestly, I enjoyed the show, if only for the reason that it started in an unbelievable way. Before the lights came down, I was running on and on about Isabelle and how I wish I was seeing her and blah blah blah. Cylinda, in her never-ending cheeriness, said, "Just pretend that she (Patty) has red hair, is short and is singing in French."

Not 30 seconds later, the short, red-headed Patty Griffin came out on stage, sat down at the piano and started singing this:

J'irai la voir un jour,
Au ciel, dans le patrie,
Oui j'irai voir Marie,
Ma joie et mon amour.

Au ciel, au ciel, au ciel,
J'irai la voir un jour.

I swear, I can't even make this up if I tried.

God help me if I ever mistake one for the other.

Top 10 2006 ...things

10. Cross-country trip: In January, I was dragged, I mean, I gleefully went along on a trip across the bottom half of the USA with my family. We had a total of four CDs, three of which were Celine. There was also a bird in the car and, oh yeah, everyone had to put up with me. It was, in a word, awesome.

9. Black Friday: This was the first experience of my life shopping on the day after Thanksgiving. Actually, it was more the night. And more actually, it was the last experience of my life shopping like that. Insane in the membrane.

8. Teaching myself piano: I've always wanted to play Fur Elise and since I've received a keyboard for Christmas, I've learned this Beethoven mega-hit. My recital is at 4pm this Saturday in the cafeteria. I come on after the kindergarten class. Bring the camcorder.

7. Other French music: After focusing a little scarily on just Celine and Isabelle for about two years, I branched out and realized that there are more of them and they're almost as good (but not as hot). In particular, Chimene Badi and Patrick Bruel (who are really French and not the fake Canadian French) are quite talented in their poppy pop-star ways.

6. Living in Atlanta: I've been here for...1,2,3...how many years?...and this past year was one where I was actually proud to be here. With the world's largest aquarium opening and the Louvre collaboration at the High Museum of Art getting off to a great start, it felt like Atlanta was being recognized by others (ha, take that, NY MOMA) as a real city. When I was watching the July 4th fireworks at Lenox (the largest fireworks display in the Southeast) I felt very small, but at the same time...very wet. It was raining.

5. Celine's Vegas spectacular showtacular: When we were in Vegas for a week in the Spring, I saw Celine not once, not twice, but THREE awesome times. It was awesome. The first night, when no one else would come with me (losers), an official Caesars Palace dude upgraded me to orchestra level seats where I sat beside French people making fun of the Americans. It was awesome. And then, at the third show, we had second row seats and I was this close to Celine. But I kept cool, man. It was awesome.

4. iPod: It sounds stupid to say that a little music playing device changes your life, so I'm not going to do it. But...it's so pretty. And pretty things (usually women-like) can change your life. So if my iPod (the I stands for Isabelle) is a woman and I'm...no, wait, I'm still me and you're....HEY! Who the hell are you?

3. Montreal: With my dear friend Britton, I had one of the best vacations of my life in this city. I know, and it was in Canada, too! When I was younger and even more naive than I am now (yes, it is possible), I wanted to live in so many cities in the world, but now that I'm old...er, I really only like to be home. When I was in Montreal, though, I felt I was already there.

2. Seeing Isabelle Boulay in concert: I know her shows are really part of the Montreal trip, but this experience is separated in my head. I honestly connect with Isabelle's music like no one else's and her voice is the most wonderful thing I have ever heard in my life. I also think (and you might not know this about me) that she is one of the most prettiest things I've ever seen in my life, including iPod. Wow, right? Wow.

1. Learning French: Applying myself to learning this ridiculous language (I say that with respect because I believe it's the most beautiful sounding language in the world) tops my top things of 2006. I went from not knowing how to ask questions (it's more complicated than necessary) to having a third of the people in Montreal respond back to me in French (an accomplishment in a one-third English city, I think) to reading Harry Potter en francais (up to Azkaban now). It's been quite a process and the more I learn, the less I think I know. But that means I'm learning, right? Or is it the other way around...Anyways...

Bonne Annee! Happy New Year!

Girls in parking lots

After a highly successful drunken day at work, I managed to find myself in the parking lot of a questionable area in Atlanta known to repel anyone with a job or self-motivation. Lo and behold, the Indigo Girls found themselves in the same parking lot! What a coincidence! Or was it...?

I almost didn't recognize them through my altered state since they were dressed rather decently. But then I spotted the mullet. They spit out their chaw, opened their guitar cases and started playing some songs about who-knows-what. All I remember is that some enterprising people threw in a few quarters and dollar bills to get them to stop.

After a few songs, the shut-up-I'm-trying-to-slack-and-skateboard crowd achieved their goal and the Girls packed up and went to buy some soy lattes in the nearby coffeeshop. I followed them with their new CD (Despite Our Differences) that had automagically appeared in my hand.

I got both of them to sign the CD by agreeing to listen to an "educational" talk about the merits of baking "natural" granola using "solar energy" panels. Then I went home and found this article in the local paper to make sure I wasn't making up stories again:

Indigo Girls do the parking lot in Little Five Points (AJC, 9/22/06)

Dragon*Con

After three years of Dragon*Con fun, I've learned that:

There are never too many Storm Troopers.

Jabba may be overwhelmed. Wouldn't you?

Grant, Kari and Tory from Mythbusters. They're paid to blow things up on TV. Awesome.

No planet, just an escalator.

So Leo got the girl! I always liked Leo.
No, my favorite is Mikey. Yes, I have a favorite Turtle. Shut up.

Still waters

Ten years ago:

Yen + an Indigo Girl + beer (half can) = bad things

But last night, when one of them sat down directly in front of me and my Stella Artois (whole pint), all I could think of was, Please move your head. Emily was enjoying the five artists who were playing before her set and thanks to her broad shoulders and big red head, I don't know what any of those five artists looked like.

Not that everything's changed. Amy still looked like she just stepped out of Deliverance with her mullet AND cut-off jean jacket. Emily found yet another shirt from her attic that was already very, very old 10 years ago and thought it appropriate to wear in public.

(A + E) * Eddie's = Verklempt Yen

And me, well, I still got a bit verklempt at hearing Ghost with its constant arpeggio fading in and out as if it was always there, all along. Like these Girls...always there, all along...still making bad wardrobe choices...still reminding me that my love of (good) music started with them...

I may not listen to them very much these days, but still... thanks always...

Pay attention

In order to stave off my boredom, I think I'll try to bore you to death and list some of the more recent CDs I've bought-ened.

Strange Conversations by Kris Delmhorst - I haven't given this a fair listen because my damn thumb is unable to scroll past I on iPod. The I is for...ah nevermind. Pay attention! Anyways, the songs on this CD are based on or inspired by poems. The first track is well done, especially the whole "now that's what I call music" part. I haven't gotten much farther without falling asleep. Some of these songs are way slow and I like some pep! If I can't have pep, I'll take a caipirinha or just some sugar.

Dis-moi que tu m'aimes by Chimene Badi - This is a fun pop album by a pop star who sings pop songs. If she sang in English, I would most certainly turn up my nose, but since I'm biased and lack credibility when it comes to music choices, I'm allowed to like her.

Alys Robi soundtrack - This was a tv miniseries about the first major international singing star from Quebec in the 1930s. Oh yes, they bred more than just Celine up there. BUT WHY? Good question. Isabelle (remember her? The pretty pretty one? Pay attention, would you?) sings the Spanish-translated-to-French songs in a sexy, sexy way. There's also 4 instrumentals which I adore. I love the whole CD mostly because Isabelle's interpreting these songs which were written to woo women. That's awesome!

Random songs

I've seen lots of blogs where people list the last few songs they've been listening to as an exercise in, I don't know, making lists? But I like lists. I could make a list of why I like lists...some other day. Today I want to be a copycat and make a list of the last 5 songs that my iPod shuffled for me. Of course, I'm not actually listening to these songs since I only have ears (and eyes) for Isabelle these days. I'm just looking at the title and then moving on.

  1. A contretemps by Patrick Bruel - Hey, this is nice, old-timey Frenchy...ok, that's enough.
  2. Au moment d'etre a vous by Isabelle Boulay! - Woohoo, my iPod jamBox knows what I like. I must listen to this all first. This is one of the prettiest songs ever in the whole history of songs. The live album is a nearly perfect body of work from beginning to end.
  3. J'attendais by Celine Dion - Oh, Celine, I just woke up. I don't want to fall asleep again. This song comes from the album D'eux which is the biggest selling French album ever. Really, and yes, before you ask, you do look like you care.
  4. Everywhere by Michelle Branch - During one period in my life, I listened to The Spirit Room non-stop in my car because...I have no good reason.
  5. Why Georgia by John Mayer - Ok, I can not end on this song. I don't like his voice, but I got that song on a free (FREE!) compliation CD from Atlanta magazine a few years ago.

Let's see...no, the next song's embarassing, too. Ok, here we go:

And there are my totally, totally random five shuffled songs. Now back to pretty Isabelle.

Stupid lists

Ok, so I'm still here. We're going, we're going. THE CRUSH just has to finish her ice cream cone. I don't why it's taking her so long. I only bought a single scoop.

So, while we're waiting...did you see Paste Magazine's list of 100 best living songwriters? No? Good. You're not missing anything. Stupid list. Any list of best songwriters that doesn't include:

...I will not finish this sentence because I was never taught how to swear properly nor effectively. While I'm at it, any list of international songwriters has to include:

I'm not familiar with Golemanas' work for himself, but the songs he's written for Isabelle Boulay, including the mortifyingly beautiful Coeur combat, are all high quality stuff. Stuff that makes grown men cry and hold purses in public. And I'm not talking about no man purses.

Isabelle, by the way, will soon become the NEW CRUSH if this current one doesn't finish her damn cone soon. It's been two hours! Even if she's not eating the ice cream, shouldn't it have melted by now? Isn't that how ice cream works?

Essence of iPod

Since iPod asked me to go out with it a week ago (it's going very well, thanks), it's been very sweet. We're holding hands and having dinner together and giving each other little "surprises!". No one wants me to explain that, I know.

Anyways, it's a pretty machine and very dependable but... well... it can be insistent and even downright stubborn sometimes. Every time I put it on shuffle, it has to first play Je fais de toi mon essentiel from the musical Le Roi Soleil. I don't know, maybe it was its ex or something...weird.

So I'm an understanding sort of person (no, I'm not). I tried to understand what significance this song holds for it. The song title translates literally to I make from you my gas. What? You need my help to make...? Oh no, I mean, essence. L'essence means gas; l'essentiel means essence. Right? Who knows.

Hey, iPod dear, let's go for some ice creams. And then Walgreens.

Lori McKenna

I was just suddenly overcome with emotion for Lori McKenna and I had to share. How could a New England housewife affect me so? I don't know. Maybe looking at her will help.

Well, I'm still stumped. Oh yeah, she's a singer and, more importantly, a freakin brilliant songwriter. I discovered her from her bit appearance in Miss Folk America. That deserves its own soliloquy someday.

Maybe LM taps into my inner housewife. If you listen to her and also find an urge to clean the kitchen and drive some child to soccer practice, please let me know.

But for real, I adore her. Now, excuse me, I must go vacuum.
